Amy's birthday cake

My brother-in-law called me up and asked that I make a birthday cake for his wife's surprise birthday party.  I was ecstatic!  She really loves sewing so I decided to make her a quilt cake, with needle, thread and fabric blocks.  I think it turned out pretty cute.

  1. THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!! I don't know if you still monitor this blog or not, but I hit on this during an image search for "sewing birthday cake" and would love to make something like this for my quilting teacher. If there is any chance you'd be willing to share your techniques with me, I would be very grateful!

  2. Tracy,
Thank you. Yes!! It is a square cake, that I covered in fondant. For the quilt I rolled out a piece of white fondant and then covered it in the little square pieces of colored fondant. Then I just draped it over the cake. I made the needle, thread and spools all by hand in fondant. I used a tool that I have to make the "stitching" marks around the edges of the colored pieces but a fork or toothpick would make similar "stitching" marks as well. I hope this helps, if you have more questions let me know.
If you would like more detail on how I made any specific part...let me know and I'll step it out for you. I've actually been thinking about sharing more of my techniques and process, but I didn't know if anyone would be interested! I guess I will start :) Thanks again, I hope this helps.
